Title: THE EFFECTS
OF PARTNERSHIP ACADEMY ON THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF AT-RISK
STUDENTS
Abstract
This evaluative case study focused on the effects of a Partnership
Academy on the achievements of at-risk students who participated in
the academy. For the purpose of the study, the term at-risk referred
to students who were mainly from low income families and as a result
of their socioeconomic status may evidence low academic achievement,
retention in grades, poor attendance rates, and high drop out rates.
The study addressed these four research questions: (a) the extent
to which the Partnership Academy met its program goals, (b) factors
of the Partnership Academy that appeared to have contributed to
the success of at-risk students in the program, (c) the perceptions
of the students, teachers, administrators, and business partners
who participated in the Partnership Academy, and (d) the policy
recommendations that were derived from the study.
Data for the study were collected from focus groups of students,
teachers, administrators, and business partners connected with the
Partnership Academy as well as from document analysis. Although
the Partnership Academy did not meet its program goals, the study
findings showed that the idea of a Partnership Academy at Elgin
High School was sound even though its implementation was poor. The
study showed that many of the components necessary for the academy's
success are yet to be properly put in place.
