Comprehensive Career Development for Illinois: Initial Thoughts (Updated version provided in the fourth meeting working documents)
This document is an initial start at a working vision statement / white paper for the Task Force. It addresses the questions of:
- What is career development, from both the perspectives of the student and the system?
- What evidence exists for the success of these career development programming and services?
- What conditions and events make this an ideal time for Illinois to explore statewide recommendations for comprehensive career development initiatives?
You may also find it helpful to view a PowerPoint presentation
that was discussed at the Task Force meeting. The PowerPoint follows the outline of the paper, however it includes more detailed information on the research studies that are referenced.
Visioning brainstorming tools
A good portion of this first meeting was dedicated to "getting to know you" and "setting a direction" activities. The group agreed that a key product from the Task Force efforts would be a white paper that sets forth a new, comprehensive vision for K-16 career development across the state of Illinois . Initial steps were taken to begin defining the contents of that mission. Here are a few tools that were used at the meeting to get the brainstorming started:
- Questionnaire Adapted from the "Study Guide"

The "Study Guide" was published with the 1975 An Introduction to Career Education: a Policy Paper of the U.S. Office of Education. A subsection of 20 Study Guide questions were used to stimulate individual's thinking on priorities and preferences. Responses will continue to be used in determining the vision for comprehensive career development in Illinois.
- List of Brainstorming Stems and Ideas

This list was prepared solely to stimulate thoughts and to get ideas flowing. Task Force members were encouraged to build on this list, prioritize components, and adapt content within small group discussions. Commentary from small groups will continue to be used in determining the vision for comprehensive career development in Illinois.

This PowerPoint presentation was simply used to support the conversations mentioned above.
Next Steps
In the spirit of providing a global view of potential directions that the Task Force may take, this PowerPoint was presented to show an initial sketch of possible Task Force themes and meeting schedules. It will continue to be revised based on Task Force Member input and feedback.
