National Community College Symposium, New Paper Commissioned for June 2008 Symposium sponsored by United States Department of Education
In March the Secretary’s Summit on Higher Education followed up findings and recommendations from last year’s Commission on the Future of Higher Education and offered an action plan for a twenty-first century higher education system. Following the Commission’s work, and in accord with the community college career and technical education mission authorized by the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006 (P.L. 109-270), the U. S. Department of Education will support a National Community College Research Symposium in June 2008. The symposium will be sponsored by the Department's Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) and will contribute to the research base for OVAE’s community college initiatives.
Among ten selected papers, Dr. Debra Bragg, director of OCCRL, was selected to write a paper titled "Policy Issues and Implications of Transition To, Through, and From the Community College." The paper examines literature associated with youth and adult transition to, through, and from the community college and considers policy issues associated with various innovations and initiatives that have been proposed over the past decade (or more). Dr. Bragg's paper will draw on results from eight empirical studies on youth and/or adult transition that she has directed or to which she has been a major contributor.
